Calif. High Court To Hear Stonebridge Coverage Denial Case

Law360, Washington (December 12, 2013, 7:49 PM EST) -- California’s highest appeals court on Wednesday agreed to review a lower-court decision wiping out most of a $19 million punitive damages award against Stonebridge Life Insurance Co. for denying coverage to a paraplegic former Marine for an extended hospital stay.

The Supreme Court of California agreed to hear the appeal of Thomas Nickerson, who had won the $19 million judgment in March 2011, after a jury found that Stonebridge had acted fraudulently when it deemed much of his hospital stay for a broken leg medically unnecessary...
