IRS Vendors Owe $589M In Federal Tax Debts, Watchdog Says

Law360, New York (December 17, 2013, 6:10 PM EST) -- Vendors who service the Internal Revenue Service owe the agency nearly $590 million in unpaid federal tax debts in spite of federal law that prohibits federal agencies from contracting with businesses that have unpaid federal liabilities, says an IRS watchdog's report issued Tuesday.

The IRS has controls to prevent so-called suspended and debarred vendors from receiving IRS contracts, but between October 2010 and July 2012, the agency nonetheless entered contracts with suspended vendors and paid $741 million to nearly 1,200 vendors who had outstanding tax debts,...
