FTC Orders Divestitures In $1.4B Funeral Home Merger

Law360, New York (January 2, 2014, 3:52 PM EST) -- The Federal Trade Commission has ordered Texas-based Service Corp. International to sell off 91 funeral homes and cemeteries worth about $50 million a year to address concerns that its $1.4 billion acquisition of Stewart Enterprises Inc. would harm competition.

The agency said Dec. 23 that without the divestitures, the deal would likely substantially lessen competition for funeral and cemetery services in 59 markets across the country where SCI and Stewart competed head-to-head.
