'Patent Troll' Sues FTC Over Litigation Threats

Law360, New York (January 13, 2014, 10:24 PM EST) -- Accused patent troll MPHJ Technology Investments LLC hit the Federal Trade Commission with a suit in Texas federal court Monday, saying the FTC mischaracterized its campaign to enforce a series of document-scanning patents as an unfair trade practice and interfered with its constitutional rights.

Already targeted by several state attorneys general and corporate heavyweights such as Hewlett-Packard Co. over letters it sent thousands of businesses accusing them of infringement, MPHJ insisted it was acting within its free-speech and intellectual property rights and that the FTC overstepped its authority by threatening to file suit against it.
