9th Circ. Revives Enviro Suit Over Arctic Drilling Leases

Law360, New York (January 22, 2014, 6:53 PM EST) -- The Ninth Circuit revived a lawsuit challenging the federal government’s approval of controversial oil drilling permits in the Alaskan Arctic, finding Wednesday that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management made mistakes in estimating how much oil might be recoverable in the area.

Alaskan environmental groups and communities in 2012 had appealed a federal judge’s ruling that upheld the bureau’s approval of 487 Arctic Ocean oil drilling leases, maintaining the agency failed to properly evaluate potential environmental impacts.
