EU Denies German Bid To Review $11.5B Telefonica-KPN Deal

Law360, New York (January 30, 2014, 3:48 PM EST) -- The European Commission on Thursday again stymied German regulators' plans to review a planned €8.6 billion ($11.5 billion) tie-up between the German operations of telecom giants Royal KPN NV and Telefonica SA, saying it is “better placed” to evaluate the deal.

German authorities had fought to take over the merger review since EC competition head Joaquin Almunia said in September that his agency would oversee the process, arguing the proposed transaction would solely affect the German mobile market.
