Markey Wants Troubled US Coal Leasing Program Halted

Law360, New York (February 4, 2014, 4:05 PM EST) -- Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., on Tuesday urged the U.S. Department of the Interior to halt its federal coal-leasing program until it fixes problems of undervaluing highlighted in a U.S. Government Accountability Office report he claims cost taxpayers millions of dollars.

The Markey-commissioned GAO report, which was released Tuesday, said the DOI's Bureau of Land Management may not be fully considering future market conditions when developing a fair market value of the coal contained in the tracts of federal land it's leasing.
