House Members Urge HHS To Overhaul Medicare Audit System

Law360, New York (February 11, 2014, 3:25 PM EST) -- A group of 111 lawmakers urged U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Director Kathleen Sebelius on Monday to reform the auditing system for Medicare claims, citing a massive backlog and other institutional issues.

In the brief letter, the group of mostly Republican members of Congress took issue with the Recovery Audit Contractor program's system of providing Medicare auditors with a 9 to 12.5 percent commission based on the value of claims they deny.
