Microsoft Bends to E.U. Pressure, Bares Source Codes

Law360, New York (January 25, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Succumbing to pressure from the European Commission to disclose strategic patent data related to its Windows operating system, Microsoft Corp. has agreed to license some of its source codes to rival software makers.

“We are opening the door to a new step,” said Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith at a press conference, according to Reuters. “We are not seeking to close the door on any old steps. We will also license the Windows source code itself.”
