Dem Sens. Introduce Bill To Crack Down On Patent Trolls

Law360, Los Angeles (February 27, 2014, 8:57 PM EST) -- Two U.S. Senators on Thursday introduced the Transparency in Assertion of Patents Act, which they say would better equip the nation’s top consumer protection agency with the tools necessary to crack down on so-called "patent trolls" that buy up patents to sue or intimidate businesses.

The legislation, introduced by Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., on behalf of herself and Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., would empower the Federal Trade Commission to help fight against scams impacting consumers by setting minimum requirements for patent assertion entities’ demand letters and...
