NY Launches Regs Targeting Tax Preparer Fraud

Law360, New York (March 3, 2014, 1:35 PM EST) -- New York is intensifying its oversight of tax preparers under new regulations announced Monday that require most preparers to take a competency exam and continuing education classes and meet applicable Internal Revenue Service requirements in order to keep their state registration.

The regulations, announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, apply to 40,000 paid tax preparers in the state and considerably expand upon prior requirements that called for tax preparers to register annually with the state. The state is one of four — including California, Oregon and Maryland...
