Chevron Prevails Over 'Corrupt' $9.5B Amazon Pollution Award
By Andrew Scurria (March 4, 2014, 12:00 PM EST) -- A New York federal judge on Tuesday declared an unprecedented $9.5 billion Amazon pollution judgment against Chevron Corp. to be the product of an "egregious fraud" by attorney Steven Donziger and his Ecuadorean clients and prohibited enforcement of the award in the U.S.
As was expected, Chevron walked away from the intensely acrimonious crusade against the blockbuster award with a dramatic ruling from U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan divesting Donziger and the so-called Lago Agrio plaintiffs of any interest in the underlying Ecuadorean litigation and blocking enforcement proceedings.
