New EEOC Guidance Highlights Religious Accommodations
Law360, New York (March 6, 2014, 5:53 PM EST) -- With religious discrimination claims on the rise, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission released new informal guidance on Thursday reminding employers of their responsibility to accommodate workers' religious grooming or garb practices under Title VII.
The update to the agency's informal guidance comes as the number of religious discrimination charges brought to the board has been on a steady rise. In fiscal year 2013, the EEOC received 3,721 charges alleging religious discrimination, more than double the 1,709 charges it received in fiscal year 1997.
