FTC Shuts Down Debt Collector Masquerading As Gov't Unit

Law360, Chicago (March 13, 2014, 8:04 PM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission said Thursday that it had shut down a debt collection operation that allegedly preyed on consumers by posing as a government entity and threatening them with arrest on false check fraud charges.

At the FTC's urging, a New York federal judge issued a temporary restraining order on Feb. 24 against the operation run by Mark Briandi and William Moses, freezing its assets and appointing a temporary receiver to take over the business, according to the commission.
