OECD Proposal Takes Aim At Tax Treaty Abuse

Law360, New York (March 17, 2014, 3:06 PM EDT) -- The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development on Friday released a set of proposed guidelines intended to strengthen bilateral tax treaties and prevent companies from exploiting loopholes in international treaties that allow them to avoid paying taxes.

The OECD released draft guidelines that include a list of statutory language countries should include when crafting cross-border tax treaties. The proposal is part of a larger OECD base erosion and profit shifting project that seeks to modernize the international tax system and combat corporate tax avoidance.
