PHMSA Allows Coal Tar, Medical Waste Shipping Alternatives

Law360, Washington (March 17, 2014, 4:08 PM EDT) -- The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration finalized a rule Monday allowing alternative methods for the shipment of coal tar, certain medical waste and several other hazardous materials outside of current regulatory requirements, codifying an existing special permit process.

PHMSA said in a Federal Register notice that it would adopt into the Hazardous Materials Regulations certain widely used or long-standing special permit conditions for shipping several hazardous substances outside of the administration’s set methods, cutting down on red tape.
