Pa. Hospital Network Pays $1.5M For FCA Kickbacks

Law360, New York (March 19, 2014, 5:15 PM EDT) -- West Penn Allegheny Health System Inc. will pay the federal government $1.5 million to end an investigation into False Claims Act violations it may have committed by offering doctors below-market leases that resembled kickbacks for referrals, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The deal, which stems from potential breaches that West Penn voluntarily disclosed, joins a long line of FCA settlements in recent years involving the increasingly close ties between hospitals and doctors who are being driven together by financial pressures.
