DOJ Denies Cruz's Bid For Special Prosecutor In IRS Probe

Law360, New York (March 20, 2014, 2:36 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice has denied a request from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to have a special prosecutor investigate the Internal Revenue Service's alleged targeting of conservative political groups, the senator said Wednesday.

In a letter dated March 10, the DOJ said special counsel is only brought on to lead department investigations under extraordinary circumstances and is not warranted for its IRS probe. Cruz claims the department's lead investigator has a conflict of interest because he "is a partisan Democrat."
