Medtronic Sues Biomet Over Spinal Fusion Patents

Law360 (February 2, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Just a few months after medical device maker Medtronic was forced to license spinal fusion patents from a Los Angeles surgeon for a head-spinning $1.35 billion, the company is asserting three of those patents against rival Biomet Inc. and one of its subsidiaries.

The suit, filed by Medtronic’s spinal unit Medtronic Sofamor Danek Inc., accuses Biomet and its orthopedic device unit EBI Spine LP of infringing seven patents in Medtronic’s single-lock anterior cervical plating systems used in cervical spinal fusions.
