EU Court Backs Deutsche Telekom's $19.8M Fine

Law360, New York (April 10, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A European court has upheld a $19.8 million penalty against Deutsche Telekom AG, agreeing with a European Commission finding that the company abused its monopoly power by overcharging rivals for access to its local loops.

“In its judgment today, the Court of First Instance rejects all the pleas advanced by Deutsche Telekom,” the court said on Thursday. “The fact that Deutsche Telekom's charges had to be approved by [German telecommunications regulator] RegTP does not absolve it from responsibility under competition law.”
