Insurance Cos. Sue For Piece Of Vioxx Settlement

Law360, New York (April 18, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Nearly 50 insurance companies, including Aetna Inc., UnitedHealth Group Inc. and several state Blue Cross and Blue Shield affiliates, have sued the crafters of the $4.85 billion Vioxx settlement, claiming they are being blocked from receiving their share.

Forty-seven health insurers filed the lawsuit on April 14 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, claiming that the system established to distribute settlement funds “renders it impossible to identify their members who are participating in the agreement and to assert their reimbursement rights...
