Parishes Fight $45.7M Offering To Sex Abuse Victims

Law360, New York (February 17, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Complicating the increasingly thorny wrangling between Roman Catholic officials and individual churches, an organization of 82 parishes in Eastern Washington is opposing a recent $45.7 million settlement offer by Bishop William Skylstad to sex abuse victims as part of the archdiocese's bankruptcy proceedings.

As one of three nationwide Roman Catholic dioceses that has filed for bankruptcy in recent years due to claims of sexual abuse by priests, the Spokane diocese, which filed for Chapter 11 protection in December 2004, made the offer earlier this month....
