U.S. Judge Blocks Ban on Videos Sent to Awards Voters

Law360 (December 5, 2003, 12:00 AM EST) -- U.S. District Judge Michael Mukasey in Manhattan barred the Motion Picture Association of America from enforcing a ban on the distribution of advance copies of films being sent to award judges, siding with the independent producers that claimed the policy put them at a disadvantage versus big-studio releases.

Mukasey said the independent film producers had shown they would be irreparably harmed because the award season had already started, and the ban has already prevented them from sending out screeners in two competitions.
