BP Plea Agreement Violates U.S. Law: Appeals Court

Law360, New York (May 8, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Government prosecutors should have consulted with the victims of a deadly 2005 explosion at BP PLC's Texas City, Texas, plant before agreeing to a plea agreement with the oil giant, a federal appeals court ruled on Wednesday.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals found that the plea bargain violated a U.S. law that gives wronged parties a say in any deals that may arise in the case. It sent the agreement back to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
