Laid-Off Public Defenders Sue Atlanta Under Title VII

Law360, New York (June 6, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Five former public defenders for the city of Atlanta have filed a federal civil rights suit claiming they were chosen for layoffs last year because of their race and gender.

The five black women are representing themselves in the suit filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

The plaintiffs claim that the city violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act when it chose to eliminate their positions but retain nonblack and male colleagues during staff cutbacks in the public...
