Philly Xarelto Suits Combined Into Mass Tort Program

Law360, Philadelphia (January 21, 2015, 1:24 PM EST) -- The top administrative judge in Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas has created a new mass tort program to consolidate a slew of product liability cases over Johnson & Johnson unit Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Bayer Corp.'s blood thinner Xarelto, according to an order docketed Tuesday.

Administrative Judge Kevin Dougherty signed off on the request, which was filed by two of the six firms currently representing Xarelto plaintiffs. As of Jan. 14, 73 cases have been filed in the court alleging that the medication, designed as a replacement for warfarin, has caused severe internal bleeding.
