Tobacco Ruling Causes Mistrial 'Nightmare,' Judge Says

Law360, Los Angeles (April 2, 2015, 8:29 PM EDT) -- A Florida judge declared a mistrial Thursday in an Engle progeny case against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. that was well underway, hours after the state's Supreme Court handed down game-changing rulings for tobacco lawsuits that caused what the judge called "a real nightmare" for the case.

On the fourth day of trial, Judge Jack Tuter told Broward County, Florida jurors that the high court's rulings could affect jury instructions in the case, lawyers had already made arguments, and he was not confident the trial could proceed...
