By Carolina Bolado (April 7, 2015, 8:07 PM EDT) -- A Florida federal judge Tuesday granted an emergency request for depositions of Colombian paramilitary members by plaintiffs in multidistrict litigation against Chiquita Brands International Inc. seeking to hold the company responsible for murders allegedly committed by paramilitary groups.
U.S. District Judge Kenneth A. Marra said that the plaintiffs had sufficiently shown that three former commanders of the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia, a paramilitary group accused of killing the plaintiffs' family members, would likely disappear and not cooperate after their release from Colombian prison, which could occur at any time.
