Clinic Settles EEOC's 1st Transgender Suit Under Title VII

Law360, New York (April 10, 2015, 3:45 PM EDT) -- The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission secured a settlement with a Florida eye clinic Thursday in one of its first attempts to litigate transgender discrimination claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

The EEOC's suit, filed last year against the Lakeland Eye Clinic, was one of the first times the agency lodged allegations of transgender discrimination and pursued in federal court a position that gender identity bias is prohibited by the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
