Intellectual Ventures Patents Axed In Symantec, Trend Case

Law360, New York (April 22, 2015, 6:31 PM EDT) -- A Delaware federal judge on Wednesday held that two Intellectual Ventures LLC antivirus patents are invalid for claiming abstract ideas, likely slashing a $17 million infringement verdict against Symantec Corp. and shutting down an upcoming trial against Trend Micro Inc.

U.S. District Judge Leonard Stark granted motions by Symantec and Trend seeking judgment that two of the patents asserted by the major intellectual property-licensing firm are not patent-eligible under the U.S. Supreme Court's Alice decision barring patents on computer-implemented abstract ideas.
