EU Blesses Delta, Northwest Merger

Law360, New York (August 7, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Commission has approved the proposed $17.7 billion merger deal between Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp. without conditions, though the deal still faces fierce opposition in the U.S.

The commission said Wednesday that the merger would not significantly affect competition because the airlines have only a limited presence in the air cargo market in Europe, and their trans-Atlantic passenger routes mostly do not overlap.
