Environmentalists Urge Grazing Halt In Sonoran Desert

Law360, New York (August 13, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A nonprofit conservation group has sued the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management, accusing it of authorizing destructive livestock grazing at the Sonoran Desert National Monument in violation of a presidential proclamation.

The suit was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona by Western Watersheds Project.

The group alleges that the Bureau of Land Management should not have renewed livestock grazing licenses in the protected desert area without first conducting a “grazing compatibility determination.”
