Three-Airline Global Agreement Hits EU Snag

Law360, New York (August 29, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A major tie-up between American Airlines Corp., British Airways PLC and Iberia SA has hit a snag, as the European Commission announced Friday it would scrutinize the agreement for antitrust issues.

European Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd said Friday the EC was looking at the plan from an antitrust perspective but wasn't opening a merger investigation.

The news came as a relief to Virgin Atlantic Airways, whose CEO on Friday welcomed the probe.
