NYC Closes Door On Sidewalk Air Conditioning

Law360 (September 4, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg passed a law Wednesday prohibiting stores from blowing cold air onto sidewalks in an effort to attract shoppers.

Under the initiative, offenders will receive a written warning on first violation and will be hit with $200 and $400 civil fines for second and third violations within a year and a half.

The city's Environmental Control Board will enforce the law, which does not apply to stores under 4,000 square feet that are not chains. Restaurants that open into sidewalk cafes...
