EU Investigates Proposed KLM-Martinair Merger

Law360, New York (September 9, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Commission has launched an in-depth investigation into KLM Group's plan to acquire rival Martinair, citing concerns about reduced competition.

The merger between KLM and Martinair, both based in the Netherlands, could substantially reduce competition, especially for passenger transport between Amsterdam and the Dutch Antilles, the commission said Monday.

“At a time of consolidation in the European airline sector, the Commission must make sure that consumers continue to have a competitive choice of airline services,” European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said.
