EPA Sues Mining Cos. Over $22M Superfund Cleanup

Law360, New York (September 15, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking $21.3 million from gold producer Newmont Capital Ltd. and one of its units to cover the cost of the cleanup of a former gold mine in California.

The EPA and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control filed the suit Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California. The suit claims that Newmont and a Canadian subsidiary are liable for the cleanup of the Lava Cap Mine Superfund Site outside Nevada City, Calif.
