Lawmakers Push To Ban Asbestos

Law360, New York (September 16, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Lawmakers put forward new legislation on Tuesday that would bar asbestos-containing products from being imported, manufactured or sold in the United States in order to protect consumers and workers from the serious diseases to which it has been linked.

Current U.S. law only bans six asbestos-containing products. More than 40 countries, including all European Union members, Australia, Brazil and New Zealand, have all prohibited the substance to greater degrees since the 1980s, when strong evidence emerged to suggest that inhaling asbestos fibers, even at low levels,...
