Supreme Court Hears High Stakes Liability Cases

Law360, New York (September 17, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- As the U.S. Supreme Court starts hearing cases in the new term Monday, product liability attorneys in two of the blockbuster industries in the field — tobacco and pharmaceuticals — will be focused on whether the nine justices decide to pull the rug out from underneath plaintiffs lawyers.

The high court will hear two cases — Altria v. Good and Wyeth v. Levine — in the next two months that both center on whether federal law preempts state-law claims. The decisions could vastly change the landscape...
