Board Adds Ringtone Royalty Fee, Keeps Other Rates

Law360, New York (October 3, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A panel of federal judges in charge of setting royalty rates for recordings has decided to preserve the current royalty rate for physical products such as CDs and permanent digital downloads — but for the first time, the panel has implemented a royalty fee for ringtones.

The Copyright Review Board announced the new mechanical rate terms on Thursday, giving copies of its initial determination to involved parties, including the Digital Media Association, the Recording Industry Association of America and the organizations that represent copyright owners....
