Feds Oppose State Bills Over Legal-Services Market

Law360 (June 28, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Rallying against lawmakers, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division and the Federal Trade Commission this week lashed out against proposed legislation that seeks to curb non-lawyers from competing with licensed attorneys in the real estate industry in New York state, saying the move is not in the best interest of consumers.

The joint comments, filed this week with the New York State Assembly Committee on the Judiciary, came as no surprise, with the agencies frequently opposing similar state legislation in the past.
