Gas Co. Convicted Of Illegally Storing Mercury

Law360, New York (October 16, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Southern Union Co. was convicted Wednesday of illegally storing liquid mercury, which allegedly led to a hazardous spill at a nearby apartment complex.

A federal jury found Southern Union guilty in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island of one felony count of knowingly storing hazardous waste without a permit, a violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

The Texas-based gas company will be sentenced on Feb. 20, 2009.
