White House Threatens Veto Of 'Class Action Fairness' Bill

Law360, Washington (January 7, 2016, 4:19 PM EST) -- The White House threatened Wednesday to veto a bill tightening standards for class certification in lawsuits and requiring asbestos bankruptcy trusts to make claimants' details public, saying it would wrongly block access to courts and hurt the privacy of asbestos victims.

The Fairness in Class Action Litigation and Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency Act, H.R. 1927, imposes unnecessary restrictions on class actions, which are intended to allow individuals to "vindicate their rights" as a group more efficiently and effectively than individual suits, according to the policy statement.
