EU Serves Colombia With WTO Complaint Over Alcohol Taxes

Law360, New York (January 13, 2016, 5:58 PM EST) -- The European Union filed a new challenge against Colombia at the World Trade Organization on Tuesday, asserting that the South American nation is levying discriminatory taxes and other regulatory hurdles against imported spirits.

In the dispute, the European Commission set its sights on Colombia's national consumption tax for alcoholic beverages, which the 28-nation bloc claimed is being applied in a way that violates Colombia's commitments under both the WTO and its bilateral trade deal with the EU.
