Some ESA Protections Extended To 2 Coral Species

Law360 (October 29, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Two threatened coral species in the Caribbean are now entitled to the same stringent protections offered to “endangered” species under the Endangered Species Act, thanks to a new rule issued by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service.

The new rule will prohibit activities that result in the death or harm of elkhorn and staghorn corals in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Department of Commerce's NOAA division said on Tuesday.
