FTC Commish Warns Of Privacy Hurdles With Connected Cars

Law360, Washington (January 20, 2016, 4:56 PM EST) -- Federal Trade Commissioner Maureen Olhausen on Wednesday warned that the automotive industry will have to take reasonable steps to secure consumer information or face enforcement actions over privacy, as mobile app makers have, as they bring autonomous cars and other technology to the market.

Speaking at the Washington Auto Show's Public Policy preview panel, Olhausen said carmakers are going to have to do some of the same balancing of consumer privacy and data protection as other industries as they develop a new generation of self-driving and networked cars meant to dramatically improve safety.
