Steelhead Trout Populations Retain ESA Protection

Law360 (October 31, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal judge has upheld Endangered Species Act protections for steelhead trout, a form of the rainbow trout that spends part of its life in fresh water and part in the Pacific Ocean.

A coalition of forestry interests and irrigation districts had argued that the National Marine Fisheries Service unlawfully distinguished migratory steelhead from resident rainbow trout populations and naturally spawned steelhead from hatchery-born steelhead when making its listing decision.
