By Ben James (November 10, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- A federal judge gave her blessing to the U.S. Department of Justice's decision to drop its challenge to the $1.6 billion merger of newsprint producers Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. and Bowater Inc. in exchange for the divestiture of a mill in Arizona.
Judge Rosemary M. Collyer of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia signed off on a seven-page memorandum opinion on Thursday saying that the divestiture of the newsprint mill in Snowflake, Ariz., was a reasonably adequate remedy for the harm forecast in the DOJ's Oct. 23, 2007, complaint challenging the merger between Abitibi and Bowater, and entered final judgment....
