Coast Guard Sues Barge Co. For Oil Spill

Law360, New York (November 10, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has sued the owner of a barge that exploded while off-loading gasoline at an Exxon Mobil Corp. facility on Staten Island, N.Y., holding it accountable for spilling about 48,000 barrels of petrol into federal waters.

Bouchard Transportation Co. Inc. and its subsidiary, B-125 Corp., violated the Clean Water Act when their barge discharged the gasoline into the Arthur Kill waterway near Staten Island, creating a visible sheen on the water's surface, the Coast Guard claimed in a lawsuit lodged last week in...
