Advocates Tell FCC To Fill 'Void' In Privacy Protection

Law360, Washington (March 7, 2016, 5:05 PM EST) -- Several consumer and privacy groups urged the Federal Communications Commission to protect consumers and succeed where other regulators have failed as the agency weighs broadband privacy rulemaking, warning that companies are leveraging customer data without proper oversight.

The American Civil Liberties Union and Electronic Privacy Information Center were among a dozen groups that wrote to the FCC urging it to "provide meaningful and much-needed protections" given the Federal Trade Commission's inability to do so. There has been tension between regulators on privacy since the Open Internet Order last year reclassified broadband providers as common carriers, which are largely exempt from FTC...
