Cash-Strapped NLRB Could Be More Flexible On Settlements

Law360, New York (March 30, 2016, 11:29 PM EDT) -- A top National Labor Relations Board official recently sent a memo to regional directors and field offices, acknowledging that the agency is facing a budget shortfall the rest of the fiscal year and suggesting various cost-cutting measures that experts say could make the agency more flexible in settlement negotiations with employers.

Anne Purcell, an associate general counsel who oversees the agency's division of operations management, sent the memo on March 9 to regional directors, officers-in-charge and resident officers, urging them to consider swift settlements in unfair labor practice cases and election disputes, among other strategies. Those deals take on "special importance"...
